Phantom growth: tourism

The relative tranquility caused by the COVID-19 pandemic gave us the opportunity to look at the city without tourists and reflect on important questions such as what that means for the planet, and how tourists and residents can live together.

On Wednesday 30 June there was a live-cast in Pakhuis de Zwijger on this subject, especially about the tourist’s role in Amsterdam. Lecturers Wina Smeenk and Ko Koens of the Urban Leisure & Tourism Labs in Amsterdam and Rotterdam were allowed to join us for the second part of the broadcast, which looked at future solutions. In a constructive and positive critical conversation, they emphasized playful interventions at the hyper-local level in order to create tourist added value and avoid negative elements in the future.
